Emergency Notification System
The police department has an emergency notification system designed for high-speed delivery of emergency and time-sensitive messages to residents in Prairie Village and Mission Hills. “CodeRED,” as it is known, delivers information from the police department via telephone, text messaging, cell phone and e-mail. The purpose of “CodeRED” is to alert residents of emergency or life-threatening situations, public safety issues, and other situations deemed appropriate and necessary to provide for the safety of citizens.
“CodeRED” is capable of notifying the community of a potential threat to public safety in a matter of minutes and can also help solicit information from residents when needed. When receiving a call, residents are asked to take a few minutes to listen to the prerecorded message, which will contain important information or instructions, and then to contact the police dispatcher IF they have any relevant information to offer.
The system runs off of published telephone numbers and 911 database information. Residents also have the opportunity to access the CodeRED Resident Collection Page and enter additional numbers such as a cell phone number. The information obtained is then programmed into the mapping software and, when a particular area of the map is highlighted, the system will deliver a prerecorded message to residents in that area. “CodeRED” will attempt to call each phone number up to three times, and will leave a message on voicemail or an answering machine.
