[ARCHIVED] Vehicles Left Running Unattended

carinsnow

On the morning of Monday, January 29, 2018, residents of Prairie Village, Overland Park, and Roeland Park all had cars stolen from their driveways.  All were left unlocked and running.

This is not a new occurrence, as cold weather brings with it the seasonal problem of unlocked automobiles left running in driveways. Unfortunately, thieves can spot a car with the engine running from a substantial distance due to the high visibility of warm exhaust on a cold morning and it takes just seconds for somebody to run up your driveway, open a car door, and drive off.  Please remember that leaving an unlocked car running unattended, even for a short period of time is ill-advised.

The car is just one concern; usually, the key ring has your house and maybe an office key on it, a key to other cars you own, or in some cases a pouch that has your ID and credit cards. In some instances, you may have already left your purse, phone, or tablet in the car while you go back inside.

Please consider the following:
  • If you must start your car and leave it please lock the doors and use a spare key to get back in.
  • Do not leave valuables or any business or personal information (correspondence, bills, even receipts) in your vehicle.
  • Remember: these thefts do not just happen in residential neighborhoods. Convenience stores, post offices, and daycares are also frequently targeted facilities where these crimes occur.
Thank you for your time and please consider sharing this message with your neighbors.
