Belinder Road Project
What is the project scope?
The City’s 2026 capital improvement program includes street and stormwater improvements on Belinder Road from Tomahawk south to the City limits, a portion of 68th Street just west of Belinder, behind the homes on the south side of 69th Street west of Belinder and on 70th Terrace from Belinder to Overhill.
Who will be directly impacted?
Property owners along these streets:
- Belinder (Tomahawk south to City limits)
- 68th Street (Belinder west to the creek channel)
- 69th Street (south side only - Belinder west to the creek channel)
- 70th Terrace (Overhill to Belinder)
When will this project begin?
Beginning in early October, Kansas Gas will be replacing its line from 69th Street north to 67th Street. Kansas Gas plans to complete this section by Thanksgiving as there will not be any construction on this project from Thanksgiving through January 1. Google Fiber and WaterOne both plan to begin their projects in January 2026 and Kansas Gas will continue their work as well. All this utility work will result in valuable infrastructure improvements. Please know that the City will work to ensure the utilities restore areas disturbed during their project, but in some cases the final restoration will not occur until all the utility and City work is complete. The City’s portion will begin in April 2026.
What is the timeline of the City’s portion of the project
The City will solicit bids for the project in February and award the contract in March.
The City’s project will likely in April 2026 and should be substantially complete in November. The project includes significant updates to the stormwater system (especially south of 67th Street) and replacement of the roadway. The street work includes replacement of sidewalks, curbs and driveway approaches in poor condition.
How will this project impact traffic?
Local traffic will be allowed in the work zone; however, there will be periods of time when the roadways are completely closed, and drivers will need to access their home from only one direction. After the stormwater and curb work is completed, the roadway will be milled and paved. On paving days, no traffic will be allowed on the roadway.
What else might be helpful to know?
- The most important thing to remember is that all disturbed areas will be restored.
- Thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience during this project.
- If you have any questions, or if you are planning a special event at your home between now and October 2026 please feel free to contact Jennifer Lee, City Administrator, at 913-362-9620 (or by email at jlee@missionhillsks.gov).
